Bernice Nauta

The practice of Bernice Nauta (b. 1991, Netherlands) consists of painting, drawing, filmmaking, installations, objects and stories. Central to her work is the instability of identity and the question of what it means to be a person. Her work explores themes of doubling, mimicry and transformation, drawing from literary sources, mythologies, and scientific studies. From the myth of Echo and Narcissus to contemporary sci-fi narratives, Nauta weaves stories in which anything can become someone. Each painting or installation is a reconfiguration: a new attempt at form, a speculative fiction about personhood. Treating the frame behind the canvas as a skeleton, she transforms her canvases into characters, blurring the boundaries between object, image and body. Often beginning from her own experiences, Nauta develops works that unfold like fragmented narratives. Next to her individual practice, she collaborates with a variety of people.
