G.C. Heemskerk
G.C. Heemskerk does not believe in the idea of the autonomous artist; everything you do you do together with someone. They collaborate with more-than-human animals, plants, fictional characters, and (living) humans. Their work spans drawing and painting, audio, video, and performance, and always takes the form of storytelling. Influenced by esotericism, philosophy of science, and science fiction, Heemskerk’s practice questions assumptions. In their project The Plantriarchy, they ask: Who or what counts as an invasive species? In Message from the Pigeon, they investigate who has the right to public space. As part of the Multispecies Collective, Heemskerk also explores questions like: Can non-human animals make art? And who gets to decide?
